PAN or Permanent Account Number is a very important document in India required by every Indian Citizen as you will need it to file income tax returns, to make transaction above Rs. 50,000 and to even open a bank account.

Documents Required for PAN Application by an Indian Citizen

Indian Citizens need three types of documents to apply for a PAN Card. All of these three types of documents are compulsory and must be provided before the Application of PAN Card can be processed.

These documents include;

  • Proof of Identity
  • Proof of Age
  • Proof of Date of Birth

1. Proof of Identity (any one of the following):

  • Elector’s photo identity card
  • Ration card having a photograph of the applicant
  • Passport
  • Driving license
  • Arm’s license
  • Aadhaar card issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India
  • Photo identity card issued by the Central Government or State Government or a Public Sector Undertaking
  • Pensioner Card having a photograph of the applicant
  • Central Government Health Scheme Card or Ex-servicemen Contributory Health Scheme photo card
  • Certificate of identity in original signed by a Member of Parliament or Member of Legislative Assembly or Municipal Councillor or a Gazetted Officer, as the case may be
  • Bank certificate in original on letterhead from the branch (along with name and stamp of the issuing officer) containing a duly attested photograph and bank account number of the applicant

2. Proof of Address (any one of the following):

  • Copy of the following utility bills which are not more than three months old
    • Electricity bill
    • Landline telephone or broadband connection bill
    • Water bill
    • Consumer gas connection card or piped gas bill
  • Bank account statement
  • Depository account statement
  • Credit card statement
  • Copy of post office passbook having the address of the applicant
  • Passport
  • Passport of the spouse
  • Voter ID card
  • Latest property tax assessment order
  • Driving license
  • Domicile certificate issued by the Government
  • Aadhaar card issued by the UIDAI
  • Allotment letter of accommodation issued by the Central Government or State Government of not more than three years old
  • Property registration document
  • Certificate of address signed by a Member of Parliament or Member of Legislative Assembly or Municipal Councillor or a Gazetted Officer
  • Employer’s certificate in original

3. Proof of Date of Birth (any one of the following):

  • Birth certificate issued by the Municipal Authority or any office authorized to issue Birth and Death Certificate by the Registrar of Birth and Deaths or the Indian Consulate as defined in clause (d) of subsection (1) of section 2 of the Citizenship Act, 1955 (57 of 1955)
  • Pension payment order
  • Marriage certificate issued by Registrar of Marriages
  • Matriculation certificate
  • Passport
  • Driving license
  • Domicile certificate issued by the Government
  • Affidavit sworn before a magistrate stating the date of birth

Documents Required for PAN Application by a Foreigner

In case you need a PAN for yourself and are not an Indian Citizen then you need to provide the following documents for your PAN Card Application:

1. Proof of Identity by a foreigner (any one of the following):

  • Copy of Passport
  • Copy of Person of Indian Origin card issued by the Indian Government
  • Copy of overseas citizenship of India card issued by the Indian Government
  • Copy of other national or citizenship Identification Number
  • Taxpayer Identification Number duly attested by Apostille or by Indian Embassy or High Commission or Consulate in the country where the PAN applicant is located

2. Proof of Address by a foreigner (any one of the following):

  • Copy of Passport
  • Copy of Person of Indian Origin card issued by the Indian Government
  • Copy of overseas citizenship of India card issued by the Indian Government
  • Copy of other national or citizenship Identification Number or Taxpayer Identification Number duly attested by Apostille or by Indian Embassy or High Commission or Consulate in the country where the PAN applicant is located
  • Copy of bank account statements in the country of residence
  • Copy of non-resident external bank account statements in India
  • Copy of registration certificate which is issued by Foreigner’s Registration Office and shows Indian address
  • Copy of Visa granted by the foreign country and/or copy of appointment letter issued by an Indian company and original certificate of Indian Address issued by the employer
